Maple & Co was founded by John Maple in the early 19th century. It was later run by his son John Blundel Maple who transformed the family firm into one of the largest and most successful furniture makers and retailers in the world. They sold to the aristocracy and royalty in the U.K. even earning a 'By Royal Appointment' recommendation from King George IV. They built an international reputation opening shops in Paris and Buenos Aires.

They were well known for fine quality craftsmanship and were specialists in interpreting old designs and bringing them up to date with modern trends. This extensive dining suite from the 1920s being a good example of a piece they manufactured and retailed in the Queen Anne style. Queen Anne reigned between 1702 and 1714, but the style endured to about 1760. The style emphasized line and form rather than ornamentation. Decoration being in the curving and pierced shapes of the backs, the elegant rather than elaborate cabriole legs and the restrained herringbone inlay on well figured walnut which was the principal wood used in the Queen Anne period and style.
